I am trying to limit my family's exposure to harsh, dangerous and unnecessary chemicals while trying to achieve this I am also hoping to be kinder to the planet.

While on my own personal mission to reduce the amount of chemicals found in my everyday products and household I came across Fussy.

Fussy has quickly become a household name for those looking to transition to a more sustainable beauty routine.

As seen on Dragons Den, this British brand has transformed the humble deodorant into a stylish eco friendly accessory.

In this review we will explore everything from the brands ethos to the effectiveness of its unique probiotic formula.

Who Is Fussy?

showing the fussy case and refill

I love that Fussy is a UK based company on a mission to banish single use plastic from our bathrooms.

Founded with the goal of creating a high quality natural deodorant that actually works the brand has earned its reputation as the highest rated refillable deodorant on Trust pilot.

A Brand You Can Trust

Fussy is a B Corp company which means that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.

They are committed to balancing profit with purpose and benefiting workers, communities, customers and the planet.

They are a certified B Corp meaning they meet high standards of social and environmental performance.

Meaning of Fussy?

showing the case of fussy deodorant

The name Fussy reflects the brands philosophy of being picky about what goes into their products and onto your skin.

They are fussy about ingredients ensuring no nasties like aluminium or parabens are used. They are also fussy about the planet using plastic free refills and sustainable manufacturing processes to ensure your morning routine does not cost the earth.

Main Fussy Products

showing the fussy refil

While the refillable deodorant is their flagship product Fussy has expanded its range to include other bathroom essentials.

Their product line features the iconic refillable deodorant cases in various matte colours alongside their compostable refills.

They also offer natural body wash and hand wash products which follow the same refillable and eco friendly principles found in their deodorant range.

Fussy is *Parabens and *Aluminium free. Unlike traditional antiperspirants which block pores with aluminium Fussy works with your body's natural processes.

What are Parabens?

Parabens are preservatives used in cosmetics, skincare, food, and some medicines to prevent bacteria, mold, and yeast growth and to extend shelf life. Common examples of type of Parabens include methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben.

Parabens are sometimes seen as a skin concern because they can cause irritation or allergic contact dermatitis in some people, especially those with sensitive, damaged, or eczema prone skin like myself. They can also be absorbed through the skin to a small extent, which is one reason some people prefer to avoid them.

So, the issue is not that parabens are harmful for everyone, but that some people may react to them, and others simply prefer paraben-free products.

Why is Aluminium found in many deodorants?

Aluminium is added to antiperspirants to help reduce sweating by temporarily blocking sweat ducts, so less sweat reaches the skin and body odour is reduced. Current evidence does not show a proven health risk from aluminium antiperspirants for most people. While concerns about breast cancer and Alzheimer’s have been studied, major reviews and cancer organisations have not found a clear causal link.

The main known downside is skin irritation in some people, especially with stronger formulas or when applied to freshly shaved or sensitive skin. People with advanced kidney disease may be advised to limit aluminium exposure because their bodies may clear it less efficiently.

I was looking for a clean, chemical free deodorant as I can suffer from eczema and wanted to try a more natural product this is when I found Fussy.

Fussy Deodorant Review

me using the fussy deodorant

The Fussy deodorant is a solid stick formula housed in a durable lovely pebble shaped case which comes in 8+ different colours and designs including Mint, black and hot pink.

The case is light, smooth and sits nicely in your hand while being really easy to use.

The base has a twisting mechanism to dispense the deodorant from the top with a lid cover. The fussy logo is conveniently positioned to show which way is up.

Fussy's deodorant is designed to neutralise odour for over 24 hours while keeping your underarms soft and hydrated. The case itself is designed for life and is made from recycled plastic and refills are easily popped in.

I love fussy's creamy balm like texture on my skin, its feels soothing, calming and moisturising on my delicate skin which is prone to dryness and eczema. I have found this deodorant works perfectly and my skin still feels and smells fresh by the evening.

Fussy is available in over 18 different scents from Parma Violets, Forest Haze to Unscented which are found in scent categories from woody, Floral to citrus and Fresh.

Fussy Refills Review

showing how to fill the fussy case and use

The refills are the heart of the Fussy experience. Each refill contains 40g of product they come in a pack of 3 and is completely plastic free and are made from waste sugarcane pulp.

The refills are fully compostable meaning you can pop them in your garden waste or food bin once finished.

How long do the refills last?

One refill typically lasts me between four to eight weeks depending on how often you applying it.

How & When to use it

showing how to use fussy

Using Fussy is incredibly simple:

  • To get started you just drop a refill into your permanent case and click it together.
  • To apply you simply swipe the stick onto your underarms.
  • When the refill is finished you rewind the base remove the empty casing of the old refill and pop in a fresh one.

The mechanism is smooth and designed to prevent the product from crumbling or getting stuck so you use up every bit of product with no waste.

But because it is a natural deodorant rather than a chemical heavy antiperspirant you can reapply it before a workout or a night out if you feel you need an extra boost of freshness without worrying about skin irritation.

Key Ingredients & Benefits

The secret to Fussy's success is its probiotic formula. It contains Lactobacillus which is a healthy bacteria that neutralises the odour causing bacteria in your sweat.

Other key ingredients include coconut oil for a smooth glide shea butter for moisturisation and tapioca starch to help absorb moisture.

These natural components ensure you stay fresh without the use of harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances which is fantastic.

My Favourite Scents

Frequently asked questions about Fussy

Many people ask if Fussy is an antiperspirant? The answer is no it is a deodorant that focuses on stopping smell rather than stopping sweat.

Another common question is whether it is suitable for sensitive skin? Fussy offers a specific sensitive range and unscented that excludes sodium bicarbonate for those who find that ingredient irritating.

A starter pack which includes a case and one refill typically costs around twelve pounds. If you choose to subscribe you can save money with refills costing as little as five pounds each delivered to your door every few months.

This subscription model makes it comparable in price to high end supermarket deodorants while providing much better environmental value.
